Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)

Dried field horsetail (Equisetum arvense), a silica-rich herb harvested as sterile green shoots and supplied in bulk for herbal tea, extract and cosmetics.

Equisetum arvense: Field horsetail is a perennial plant of the Equisetaceae family that produces neither flowers nor seeds and reproduces by spores. It is known in Türkiye as at kuyruğu otu or kırk kilit otu, and grows widely across the temperate zones of Europe, Asia and North America.

What is horsetail?

Horsetail is distinguished by its jointed stem and the whorls of thin branches that emerge from those joints. The part used commercially is not the spore-bearing shoot that appears in spring, but the sterile green shoot that develops through the summer.

What other names does horsetail have?

It is traded as horsetail or field horsetail in English, and as at kuyruğu otu, atkuyruğu or kırk kilit otu in Turkish. Its botanical name is Equisetum arvense, which is preferred in commercial correspondence to avoid confusion between species.

What is horsetail's most notable constituent?

The plant's most distinctive feature is its high silica (silicic acid) content, which gives it a hard, abrasive texture. Historically, dried shoots were used for this reason to polish metal and wooden surfaces.

How is horsetail harvested and dried?

The sterile green shoots are harvested in summer once fully developed. They are dried in ventilated conditions away from direct sunlight to preserve colour, then cleaned of foreign matter, sieved and baled.

Which species must be avoided at harvest?

Equisetum arvense must not be confused with marsh horsetail (Equisetum palustre), which can grow in similar habitats. The two species are distinguished morphologically, and correct species identification is decisive for the commercial acceptability of the dried herb. Species control is applied during harvesting and sorting.

What is horsetail used for?

  • Herbal tea industry: infusion teas and blend component
  • Extraction: raw material for botanical extract production
  • Cosmetics industry: plant ingredient in hair and skin care formulations
