Kokina, also known as the “Christmas flower” or “New Year’s flower” in Turkish culture, is a decorative plant commonly seen during the holiday season.
Its real name is Ruscus aculeatus, and it belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It stands out with its bright red berries and shiny green leaves, often used in festive arrangements.
Interestingly, Kokina is not a single plant, but a combination of two different plants:
Red berries: from Smilax excelsa
Leaf-like green stems: from Ruscus species
These parts are tied together with thin wires to create the iconic Kokina bouquet.
Long-lasting: It can remain fresh and beautiful for weeks.
Symbol of luck: In Turkish folklore, if Kokina stays fresh throughout the year, it is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the household.
Spiky texture: The stems and leaves can be prickly, so they should be handled with care.
Rare in nature: Collecting Kokina is labor-intensive, making it a valued seasonal decoration.
Decoration: Especially popular in floral arrangements during Christmas and New Year’s.
Gifting: Given as a good luck charm to loved ones during the holiday season.
Floristry: Used alongside other flowers to enhance visual appeal.
Keep Kokina away from direct sunlight and store it in a cool, dry place to preserve its freshness.
It doesn’t require water, as it is used in its cut and bundled form.
